We enjoyed getting our baths and lying in bed before the school day trying to pick up our favorite radio shows. Those big watt output stations like Randy's Record Shop from Gallatin, Tennessee listening to Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Laverne Baker, W.L.S., the Diamonds, the Platters, the Flamingos, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. We also enjoyed listening to beautiful songs that reminded us of our girlfriends or boyfriends.

Getting on cold school buses to ride to school, walking on slick sidewalks in winter, down tree-lined streets in spring or autumn watching the leaves fall.  Walking or riding to school in the snow was always exciting. When you got to school, you listened to those old steam radiators snap and pop as they put off an enormous amount of heat. Somewhere in that school was a boiler room where the custodian stoked a furnace with coal, ours smoked a cigar, and told great stories while doing so. This is where the students hid to smoke as well as a few teachers. It was always exciting to see your friends and plan the next school event.  Even when not blessed with a clothes budget, we managed our own signature styles. Slick DA haircuts, our hair was so oily. We would say to friends, “Man you need an oil change.”  Probably some of that hair oil did contain motor oil from working on our old cars the previous night.

I am third from the right in the top row.  I graduated at the top of my class…..for some reason we had short people that year.
