We wore “peg pants,” sometimes rolled up and gathered to look pegged. The shirt collars were turned up to make us look cool, black pants with pink stripes and stitching, pink shirts with the black stitching, skinny belts, buckled to one side, and pants low but not as low as today. We also wore engineer boots and black leather jackets. We always had the big oily curl over our forehead. The girls were beautiful and wholesome-looking like beautiful flowers. They wore beautiful sweaters and skirts. They tied scarves around their necks. The girls wore bobby socks and saddle shoes, ponytails, short haircuts and DA’s in the back. It was white bucks for boys and girls. The white buck shoes and black wing-tip shoes were what everyone liked. There was a white insert that everybody liked to step on, while you tried to keep them white. This was really annoying. |

A kiss really meant something back then. When not tinkering with cars, even I had a date. |

I was blessed with great parents. They were fun-loving and hard-working. It seemed like every adult was your parent in that period. They showed concern for you and reprimanded you if you did something wrong. |

Mom, Dad, my brother, and I. When we came to Indiana, we looked like a scene from the movie “Grapes of Wrath”. |
